PS3 dev kits in short supply

Sony ships out more than 100 development kits for its next-generation
console; says it can't manufacture enough to meet publisher demands.
TOKYO--Sony Computer Entertainment is starting to ship out its development
kits for the PlayStation 3, but it's facing the same issues it had with the
PSP. According to its own officials, the company can't manufacture enough to
meet everyone's demand.

In an interview with Jiji News, SCE president Ken Kutaragi revealed that his
company has shipped more than 100 PS3 developer kits to game publishers in
Japan, America, and Europe. However, he also stated that SCE is running out
of parts, and it can't ship enough units to meet the requirements of the
publishers.

Presumably, the PlayStation 3 is slated for release in spring 2006 in the
US. For more details on the PS3, check GameSpot Hardware's complete coverage
of the console.

That's ironic. The same happened with the Xenon kits as well.

PS3 dev kits in short supply
They really are just beginning to ship of dev kits? A spring or summer
launch is pretty much impossible, and this timeframe really falls in place
with a 2007 release.

Of course the media will ignore this part of the equation...

No, the PS3 is slated to "launch" in Spring 2006--meaning, it will be
officially unveiled at E3, with a retail release date of Fall 2006. If it
is true that developers are getting dev kits right now, expect 18 months for
the first meager titles--Fall of 2006.

Sony was deliberately vague about the launch date in an attempt to get the
media to think that the Xbox 360 will only have a six month head-start.
Obviously, it worked...
